most "whitening" toothpastes don't include active chemicals that will decolorize your teeth. therefore, most "whitening" toothpaste doesn't really whiten your set ("whitening" toothpaste really isn't any different than "non-whitening" toothpaste). the FDA doesn't evaluate whitening ingredients in toothpaste. if you countenance around, there are whatever that do not state they are "whitening", but again it doesn't really matter.
whitening (done at a dentist) works by using carbamide or hydrogen peroxide (which is sometimes combined with a high-intensity light).
whitening (take-home trays from a dentist) works by using carbamide peroxide gels that also include glycerin, carbomer, sodium hydroxide, water, and flavoring agents.
hope this helps a little! :]
