While being a male module hinder your employ prospects, being an introvert module do so more.
It is important to be a "people person" and be able to interact with people on a daily basis in this field. If becoming a dental assistant is what you want to do, then I say, "go for it" and retake those classes that you failed.
I love my job. I mean...I REALLY LOVE my job. But I am an extrovert same you wouldn't believe.
As farther as the sexuality thing goes, more and more males are becoming dental assistants, so you module find a job, but it module verify a while. The world has yet to accept this as "normal" (whatever that is) but if it is your dream..then do it. Don't let public opinion kibosh you from fulfilling your dream.
