Best home remedy is to clean with peroxide, add neosporin, and use butterfly bandages (these hold cuts together). You are right to keep compression on it but you requirement to make sure it is clean (pour hydrogen peroxide on it - it will bubble) If the knife was filthy (cutting meat, etc) she may requirement to intend a course of antibiotics or a tetnus shot.
However, I think she needs stitches and should go to the doctor, especially if you can't stop the bleeding. An unmediated care center might be cheaper and easier than the infirmary ER. But, either way, intend treatment.
