 how do i verify if a finger is just jammed or broken?

My son jammed his finger playing basketball. He says it hurts more than some another time. Without feat to the student is there a artefact to verify if it is more than just jammed? It is swollen quite a bit but it isn't bruised. He has cover on it now.. Should I give it til morning and wager how it feels? He's 14 years old.
