The inflammation response is usually triggered, that's why you get the swelling. Some of the emzymes that promote inflammation also causing pain. Thats really as simple as i can get.

How simple? Look at it this way, your skin is a obstruction to keep organs, veins, muscles, tendons exclusive and to keep bugs and viruses outside. So when you damage the skin, you have damaged this conserving barrier. The bug is the adversary and will start via the injury, remember our skin is always covered with bugs. So the immune system or white blood cells, which are mixed in with the red blood cells, are the second line of defense. First the Lymphocytes notice a external invader, then they signal the platelets to fix the hole in the skin, so the injury will kibosh bleeding, the platelets, and then the Atlantic go kinda yellow tinge the lymphocytes. As the lymphocytes increase an attack on the bugs, the Atlantic will go red, as they call up more blood cells to the Atlantic to help. That player blood causes the inflammation, as the lymphocytes and monocytes release chemical to kill the invaders, bugs. That is the scab and yet when the skin renews itself, the scab water off. Hope that helps?
