I would say for the prototypal 24-48 hours follow RICE, which is the initial treatment for many injuries. Rest the knee and try to stay soured of it as such as possible. Ice it, use Compression as tolerated and Elevate it (above the heart) which will help with symptom and some of the pain. Take a discompose penalization to help you out in the discompose dept. If you believe that you haw have fractured it (bruising, unable to bear weight, obvious deformity, swelling, etc), then go get a xray now. If you believe it's a really bad bruise, wait a few days and if the discompose gets worsened or doesn't get better, go the doctors, orthopedic, the pearl and joint doctor, preferably, but you can move at a GP because they haw be able to diagnose it.
You haw have cracked your patella, got a pearl contusion, or just a really bad bruise. I don't think you can tear any ligaments or anything in the knee from falling on it as they are usually the result of twisting motions. The kneecap probably feels lax because of the changeful which makes it like a dish in water. The kneecap course moves anyway, up and down, and lateral to side. It's not an anchored bone, but kinda it is encased in tendons. It's a sesamoid bone.
Good Luck :)
